Thingvellir | Iceland Adventure Winter 2015

Day Two: The Roadtrip begins!

After our first day in Reykjavik and the Blue Lagoon, our fearless company was ready to hit the road. Our first stop was Thingvellir: a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the location of Iceland’s first Parliment (aka the ALTHING!) One of the reasons Iceland is known as the “land of fire and ice” is that it sits right on the divide between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. And Thingvellir is located smack on top of that divide.

The plates are separating at a rate of 2cm a year, and last year, the split an unbelievable 12cm! This split caused a fissure in the landscape where glacier melt that’s filtered through miles of lava rock pools. It’s some of the clearest water in the world. The water is so pure that nothing can grow in it. And you can go snorkeling and diving in it! Even in our provided dry suits, it was freezing cold… but with up to 100m of visibility and being able to take a sip whenever we got thirsty, snorkeling in the Silfra Fissure was probably one of the coolest (pun not intended) things I’ve ever done.

P.S. Again, with the Go Pro, and I still haven’t quite figured it out. I bet you can tell which photos I took with it and which with my Pentax…

If this was a better photo, you’d be looking at 100m of crystal-clear visibility!
